John Heide has seen this before. It's just a different venue, different issues and a different level of importance. But the dilemma that many Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre fans face on the eve of the Packers/ Minnesota Vikings matchup has similarities to other moments when people find themselves making tough choices.

The most I'm hearing is they're rooting for the Packers   -Tony Mueller

Fans of old fashioned football should matriculate to Putnam County High School Friday night to watch the Midgets battle Knox County. Putnam County head coach Tony Mueller said his team prides itself on being physical. "It's the in-your-face type of football," he said.

Putnam County made one of the top-ranked teams in the state work for the win. Led by running back Shannon Hall's combined 177 yards and three touchdowns rushing and receiving, South Shelby escaped Truman State's Stokes Stadium with a 19-0 win over Putnam County Friday. The Cardinals, the first team outside the Class 2 top 10 poll, won by three touchdowns over the now 0-4 Midgets, but the game could have been much closer.

First-year Putnam head coach Tony Mueller can feel it. Eliminate the mistakes on offense, continue to play physical defense, and the wins will come. Unfortunately for the 0-3 Midgets, there next test will be against a top Class 2 team.

Although first-year Putnam head coach Tony Mueller said he is looking for improvement from last year, he doesn't believe in setting goals for the number of wins. "I don't ever talk about wins and losses," Mueller said. "That's not the most important thing. That's the end result. We talk about doing all the little things it takes to be successful and I want to see our kids to continue to display great character and give max effort. There's no reason for a lack of effort."

In Tony Mueller's first year as the head coach of Putnam County, he knows exactly what he wants from his team. And it doesn't have anything to do with wins and losses. "This is a program that has been down for a few years," Mueller said of a team that finished 2-8 last year, and 2-5 in the Tri-Rivers Conference.

Tribune, we've been subscribing and reading you faithfully for 29 years, but we're beginning to question our commitment. We just felt sick when we saw "3 bad pitches" emblazoned across the top of Monday's paper. What a needlessly negative banner for the end of this summer's magnificent Loggers season.
